The formula

How the calculation works

1. Seeds per acre = target plants/ft² × 43,560 ÷ (germination% × seedbed survival%)
2. Grams per acre = seeds per acre × (TKW ÷ 1,000)
3. Lbs per acre = grams per acre ÷ 453.59
4. kg/ha = lbs/acre × 1.12085

How to use this tool

01

Use your seed tag

The TKW and germination values on your actual seed tag always beat the crop defaults. Overwrite the defaults before calculating.

02

Be honest about mortality

Seedbed conditions, seeding depth, and seed-to-soil contact all affect survival. Canola routinely loses 40–60% — the default reflects that. Adjust for your field conditions.

03

Custom mode for anything else

The Custom tab lets you enter any values. Useful for crops not pre-loaded, different market classes, or unusual seedbed conditions you want to model.

Important — this tool is for general information only

Crop default values are based on widely-published provincial and crop commission references for Peace region conditions. This tool is provided for educational and general informational purposes only. The calculated seeding rate is a starting point, not a prescription.

Always use the TKW and germination from your actual seed tag — the defaults are representative values, not your specific seed lot. Seedbed conditions, soil type, seeding equipment, and depth also affect final plant stand in ways this calculator cannot account for.
